How to Set Up Email in Outlook
Get your secure settings from cPanel (Set Up Mail Client), then add your mailbox to Outlook as an IMAP account. In classic Outlook, choose Advanced options and Let me set up my account manually; in new Outlook and Outlook for Mac, choose IMAP if Outlook asks.
Applies to: Email apps Outlook Blue Arctic Shared Web Hosting email (cPanel) in new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac
On this page
There are three versions of Outlook: new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac. In each, add your mailbox as an IMAP account.
Note
These steps are for Blue Arctic Shared Web Hosting mailboxes, which use cPanel. Managed WordPress Hosting doesn’t include email. On a VPS, open a support ticket if you’re not sure how your email is set up.
Before you start: get your settings
- Log in to cPanel. If you can’t log in, open a support ticket.
- In the cPanel sidebar, click Email.
- Find the address in the list, and click Manage in its row.
- On the Overview tab, click Open Webmail. Webmail opens in a new browser tab.
- If your inbox opens instead of the Webmail home page, click cPanel Webmail Home.
- In the Set up email on your device panel, click Automatically configure my device. The Set Up Mail Client page opens.
- Keep the Secure SSL/TLS Settings section (marked Recommended) open. You’ll copy the servers and ports from it.
If you see an Email Accounts icon instead, click it, then click Connect Devices next to the address. Or type the tool’s name in cPanel’s search box (Ctrl+K or Cmd+K). If you can’t find it, open a support ticket.
The ports are usually 993 for incoming mail (IMAP) and 465 for outgoing mail (SMTP). Use exactly what Set Up Mail Client shows. SSL/TLS encrypts the connection, so nobody can read your password on the way.
Not sure which Outlook for Windows you have? Try one set of steps; if the menus don’t match, use the other.
New Outlook for Windows
- On the View tab, select View settings. (Or, on the File tab, select Account info.)
- Select Accounts, then Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
- Type your email address, not one Outlook suggests.
- Select Continue.
- If Outlook asks which kind of account it is, choose IMAP.
- Enter the incoming server and its port from Set Up Mail Client, with SSL/TLS.
- Enter the outgoing server and its port from Set Up Mail Client, with SSL/TLS.
- Use your full email address as the username for both.
- If prompted, enter your password and select Done.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Select File, then Add Account.
- Enter your email address and select Advanced options.
- Tick Let me set up my account manually, then select Connect.
- Choose IMAP.
- Enter the incoming server exactly as Set Up Mail Client shows it, with its port and SSL/TLS encryption. Replace anything Outlook filled in that doesn’t match.
- Leave Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) unticked.
- Enter the outgoing server from Set Up Mail Client, with its port and SSL/TLS encryption, then select Next.
- Enter your mailbox password and select Connect.
Outlook for Mac
- Open the Outlook menu and select Settings.
- Select Accounts, then + Add Account.
- Enter your email address and select Continue.
- If Outlook asks for the account type, choose IMAP.
- Enter your full email address as the username, your password, and the servers and ports from Set Up Mail Client, with SSL/TLS.
- Select Done.
Note
In legacy Outlook for Mac, open Settings, then under Personal Settings select Accounts and Add Email Account. The rest is the same.
How to tell it worked
- Send a test message from the new account to another address you own.
- Check that it arrives at the other address.
- Reply to it, and check that the reply arrives in Outlook.
Troubleshooting
- Outlook never shows a place to enter the servers (new Outlook or Outlook for Mac), or the account won’t connect: open a support ticket. Tell us your Outlook version and add screenshots of each screen, with the password hidden.
- Outlook keeps asking for your password: check that the username is your full email address and that Caps Lock is off. If you’re not sure of the password, set a new one. Warning: every other device that uses this address stops connecting until you enter the new password there too. In cPanel, click Email, click Manage in the address’s row, and open the Settings tab. Click Change Password, enter the new password, and click Update Password. (With an Email Accounts icon: Manage, New Password, Update Email Settings.) See also Outlook keeps asking for your password.
- Outlook tries to sign you in to Microsoft or another provider: your mailbox isn’t a Microsoft account. Go back and use the IMAP or manual option instead.
- Receiving works but sending fails: make sure the outgoing server signs in with the same username and password, and check the port against Set Up Mail Client. If it fails on one network only, that network may block the port: try another network, or open a support ticket. See what to check when you can’t send email.
- A security certificate warning: don’t accept it. Use the exact server names from Set Up Mail Client.
